Following the partial government shutdown, which began on December 22, 2018, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has made temporary free and reduced lunch available for students impacted by the shutdown.

Families impacted can submit an online application here, or ask for a paper application in the cafeteria or main office. Applications are secure and will be sent to VBCPS’ Office of Food Services.

“I think the free and reduced application is a good thing,” said Mrs. Stonecipher, Kempsville’s cafeteria manager, who encouraged students that qualify to come in for meals.

“We’re not reaching the [number] of students that are free and reduced, that qualify for breakfast and lunch; they just don’t come in and get it. They’re not taking advantage of what they qualify for.”
