AP Exams Open Book/Note and Will Be Taken at Home

Paxton Coley, Managing Editor

Due to the closing of schools and the need to protect the safety of protectors and students CollegeBoard has had to get creative with prep for AP exams and how students are going to take the AP exams they’ve worked all year for.

On March 25, CollegeBoard said: “Your health and safety are our top priorities. We know the coronavirus has created new and unexpected challenges.”

On the CollegeBoard website, there are links to the official Advanced Placement Youtube channel. On this channel are videos, separated by AP course. These videos are “free, live AP review lessons, delivered by AP teachers from across the country.” This channel utilizes Youtube Live in order for students to receive extra help during these times when their teacher may not always be available. There is a schedule for when each class will go live, although the live streams remain on the channel after being aired. All times are in EST.

Official testing will be done at home this year. CollegeBoard said: “Complete your AP journey by taking your AP Exam online on any device you have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. You’ll also have the option to write your responses by hand and submit a photo. We’ll support you through exam day with testing date options and free resources.” Each course will have a 45 minute exam consisting of either one or two free-response questions, except for portfolio AP classes such as those in the AP Capstone, and AP Drawing, as well as AP Art and Design: 3-D and 2-D.

As of April 3rd, the exam schedule has been updated with the length of the exams and the specifics for the questions on each exam. They have also included what units will be tested, and what units will not. This year’s test will also be open book, and open note.

As far as exam security goes, CollegeBoard said: “Students may not consult with any other individuals during the testing period (with the exception of students working on the AP Computer Science Principles Create performance task). We will take the necessary steps to protect the integrity of each exam administration, as we do every year.” More information for taking the AP exams online can be found here.

If you do not have internet or a device suited to take the AP exams, please fill out this form by April 24th.
