Our boys soccer team has faced some ups and downs this season, but can they pull it all together for playoffs?
Kempsville’s boys soccer started the season off great. We had two shutout games against Northampton where the score was 6-1 and Green Run with a score of 5-0. This strong start was then followed by three hard losses.
Their losing streak is now over and they are still in the running to participate in playoffs. With a current standing of ninth in the region, making it past the regular season is a possibility.
Mr. Leroi Wilson, Kempsville’s boys soccer coach and Health and P.E. teacher, explains, “We started off absolutely fantastic, then we hit a little bit of a bump in the road. We are getting
back on track but it’s actually been a fun, good season.”
In preparation for games, Wilson tries to get the team “mentally right, I try to make sure they are thinking positively, working on things we can improve on, but making sure they have the confidence to go into the game so we can play well.”
Logan Prendergast, a Kempsville senior and captain of the boys soccer team, has been on the team all four years. A highlight from this season is that this striker got four hat tricks.
Jackson Vevoda, Kempsville senior, boy’s soccer captain, center midfielder, and fullback talks about his favorite part of being on the team.
“My favorite part has been meeting new people and being able to play my favorite sport with my friends.”
Vevoda and Prendergast are two of the many seniors on the team that will be graduating in just a few weeks. Boys soccer will be letting go of a lot of valuable players, so “the JV guys have to step up.” says Wilson.
“Next season we’re losing a lot so we’re just going to have to jump back in and get some coaching.”
This season could end off with a big bang if we make it to the playoffs and Wilson is looking forward to it. “The rest of the season we should hopefully make the playoffs and have a nice little run, we have a pretty good team to make it run for the playoffs so hopefully that will happen.”
No matter the ups and downs or wins and losses, the Kempsville boys soccer team is filled with resilient players who work their hardest!
