In honor of poetry week, the KHS Library decided to hold a slam poetry event. Students were encouraged to partake in this experience to express their feelings through poetry. There were different types of poetry such as blackout, magnet, etc. The majority of the poems were blackout. The students were split off into groups to form these poems, collaborating to unleash their creativity.
The participating students were given clipboards to walk around and rank the poems based on which one was the best executed. They were able to observe diverse kinds of poetry and look at the symbolism behind them. Some of the blackout poems had a literal symbol drawn out on them to represent the expressed words and emotion. These poems all had a specific meaning, which students worked to show through their poetry pieces. Many students went after more mature topics, and executed them well.
Votes were then tallied up for each poem and it resulted in a tie between group # 1 and group #9, with 5 votes each. This event lasted the whole block, and students stayed focused on their poems. They spent time in their groups, working together and creating their pieces. Here are some examples of the poetry pieces that students created:
Additionally, on the other side of the library Mrs. Soccio was teaching students the difference between properly planting and how to care for your plants and what happens when you don’t plant or take care of them correctly. She went over the various parts of the plant and why it’s important, as well as going over how to check your plant’s soil and such. Mrs. Soccio had an example of how to tell when a plant is taken care of or not, and showed students a plant that she maintained and a plant that another teacher did not maintain. Overall, it was a pretty educational and fun experience for students, allowing them to experience something new.
