When it comes to collaboration meals at McDonalds, they’re certainly not a dime a dozen. From Travis Scott to J Balvin, Cardi B to Saweetie, BTS to Michael Jordan, among others.
But then there’s the Angel Reese meal. Something drew me to this. I’m not completely sure if it was my love for basketball, burgers, barbecue sauce, or bacon, but I fully intended on finding out.
The meal usually comes with the specialty burger, along with fries and an orange Fanta. You can customize it however you like it though. I personally subbed the Fanta for a Minute Maid fruit punch. I never got to drink it, however, because I dropped it outside of my home. So I drank water. The rest of the meal came standard.
One of the things about the burger that people could not stop talking about was the barbecue sauce. It is half of what makes the burger unique, after all.
“I scooped up a spoonful and its taste greatly diverged from what it smelled like. While a hint of sweetness kicking things off, it quickly turned peppery, and in a final approach, a wallop of Cajun spice punched through. That rollercoaster ride of tang sealed the deal for this sauce, as I was instantly ready to declare awesome.” said Michael Palan, a writer from thetakeout.com.
While the sauce was good, it was not remarkable, and was definitely not all it was hyped up to be. It had a very slight kick. As much as people made it seem like it’s different from their regular barbecue dipping sauce, it tasted exactly the same, maybe with the addition of a couple of pepper flakes. All in all, the barbecue sauce was mediocre at best. I’d give it a four out of 10.
The other thing about the burger that was notable was the bacon. Now, I’m an avid bacon enjoyer. It’s one of the best meats available. So it pains me to say that this was one of the most underwhelming uses of bacon I’ve ever experienced. For one, when I read about a barbecue bacon burger, I expected more than one piece of bacon. This, however, was what I received.
This is more bacon than John Jurasek, who runs TheReportOfTheWeek YouTube channel, received on his burger. Jurasek, when reviewing the meal, received no bacon on his burger.
Despite this, Jurasek stated that “Even without the bacon, I actually found this burger to be enjoyable.”
Enjoyable is an overstatement, however. The burger could better be described as tolerable, mediocre, and overhyped.
Daymon Patterson, who goes by Daym Drops online, and runs the Daym Drops YouTube channel, stated, “That meal’s so good it make you get off your diet just to try it.” But if your experience with the Angel Reese meal is as subpar as mine was, you’re better off sticking to your diet.
