It took Playboi Carti five years to drop “MUSIC” after Whole Lotta Red, his 2020 album. Carti is known for saying he will release new music and either never does or releases it incredibly late. Initially, MUSIC was supposed to be released in January of 2024 but it wasn’t until the 14th of March this year.
Jordan Carter, better known as Playboi Carti has been making music since 2015. Carti started his music career in his teens while living in Riverside, Georgia. He later moved to New York at 18 where he was signed to Interscope.
This release was also later than anticipated. Carti originally said the album would be dropping at 3 am EST but it still wasn’t on streaming platforms until around seven a.m. Carti does try to make it up to his fans though, on March 25th he then releases MUSIC – SORRY 4 DA WAIT. This deluxe album includes four songs that weren’t on the original album and have been teased, leaked, and anticipated by listeners for a while.
Josh Long, a Kempsville Senior, has been listening to Carti for around three years. When asked if anything about the album disappointed him he responded, “‘2024’ not being on there.”
Good thing for Long, Carti released “2024” on the deluxe album along with “DIFFERENT DAY,” “BACKR00MS (with Travis Scott),” and “FOMDJ.”
Considering it took Carti so long to release MUSIC, songs like “POP OUT” and “CRANK” felt rushed and frankly weren’t any of my favorites.
MUSIC included many features from artists like Kendrick Lamar, Yung Thug, The Weeknd, Jhene Aiko, Future, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lil Uzi Vert.
Jason Colwell, a Kempsville senior and Carti listener of eight years, expresses, “I like the two Uzi features a lot… I think both the Travis features were solid too.”
Colwell has some good takes. I enjoyed “JUMPIN (with Lil Uzi Vert)” and “TWIN TRIM (with Lil Uzi Vert).”
Two of my favorite tracks off the album were “WAKE UP F1LTHY (with Travis Scott)” and “LIKE WEEZY.” Carti has shown he has a wide range when it comes to creating music. From his self-titled debut album to Whole Lotta Red and MUSIC, he shows how talented he truly is.
On my first listen, I wasn’t a huge fan but after the second or third listen I thoroughly enjoyed the album. There are a few tracks for people who aren’t very into Carti’s that I believe they would enjoy such as “RATHER LIE (with The Weeknd).”
In my opinion, ‘MUSIC’ was well worth the wait. Even non-Carti listeners could enjoy this album.
