Teacher Feature: Mr. Bruening

Jillian Chandler, Staff Writer

Although Kempsville High School has lots of wonderful students and staff, The Treaty would like to feature Josh Bruening, senior English teacher.

Mr. Bruening may be new to Kempsville, but he has 12 years of experience teaching overseas.

Bruening said being here at Kempsville has changed his teaching styles as well as his attitude towards the students.  He helps students grasp information; “their writing has progressed as far as essays, and I can see their character expanding.”

Bruening said the hardest obstacle that he has overcome was adapting to different students styles of learning. He said that it can be difficult, but he is able to manage due to changing his lesson plans so that students are able to better understand the material being taught. Bruening also receives help from Ms. Jackson, his co-teacher.

Bruening emotionally said his advice for any student pursuing teaching as a career in the future was simple: “starting education classes with another teacher would be beneficial, and getting experience from them would help a young teacher get recognized by other administrators or representatives who offer extra encouragement in 5-year programs in teaching.”

As a senior class sponsor, Bruening has made an impact on countless students preparing to go out into the world in a few short months.
