Behind the scenes of Kempsville High School’s daily life, Alice Catherman, the office manager, oversees communication between faculty, students, and parents.
“My son would tell you, I’m the ‘Chaos Coordinator,’” says Mrs. Catherman.
Mrs. Catherman has been working at Kempsville for six years. She previously worked for one year at Plaza Middle School as security.
“Everyday is a little different, it keeps me on my toes,” says Mrs. Catherman when asked about what she loves about her job.
As office manager, Mrs. Catherman’s interactions with students look different than most teachers.
“In the main office we’re kind of a safe space for students… we don’t give them grades, no referrals,” she says, which Mrs. Catherman believes allows students to have a supportive, no pressure environment.
Beyond her administrative skills, Mrs. Catherman is known for her positive energy and kindhearted spirit.
Junior Grace Homer, describes Mrs. Catherman as “a kind, loving, and caring individual.”
Homer, being close with Mrs. Catherman, says that when she began high school she immediately felt welcome due to Mrs. Catherman’s genuine personality.
“She has always taken time to check on me and ask me about things most people wouldn’t think about,” Homer says.
The impact of her leadership is evident in the office’s atmosphere. Colleague, Laurie Ahlemeyer, is the School Office Associate II Discipline in the Kempsville main office. She transferred to Kempsville from Landstown Middle School after Mrs. Catherman reached out to her.
“We have a great team in the main office, Mrs. Catherman has helped me learn new jobs and is always available when I have questions about anything,” Mrs. Ahlemeyer says about her dynamic working with Mrs. Catherman.
Her dedication to her colleagues and students not only enhances productivity but also enriches the lives of everyone around her. As she continues to foster a positive school community, Mrs. Catherman exemplifies the impact one individual can have in shaping a supportive environment.
