Kempsville’s Black Student Union is excited to announce their first official monthly newsletter! This newsletter will help keep you informed on fun events that BSU is holding throughout the month.

The rest of December is fun filled for BSU members with an upcoming Trill Talk, Christmas Card Creations, and the start of Black History Month Committee.

Get into the holiday spirit this week. Christmas cards are being created in room 205 during the second half of lunch Tuesday, Dec. 13, through Friday, Dec. 16. These cards will be donated to local nursing homes to help spread some cheer this holiday season.

Next up, Trill Talk! This month’s Trill Talk will be about code switching and its effects on identity. If you would like to share your thoughts or learn more about what code switching is, join BSU on Wednesday, Dec. 21 during one lunch. Every Chief is welcome to join.

Also, if you’re interested in Black history and want to help create some fun spirit days and activities, Black History Month Committee needs you. The committee meets in room 205 during one lunch to discuss and plan events for the month of February. Check the lunch activities calendar weekly for more information and dates. All are welcome.

BSU has also held some fun events and meetings throughout the beginning of the school year.

In October, BSU had ‘Pie on the Fly’ during Kempsville’s Bonfire. It had an amazing turn out and many students had fun getting to pie their favorite teachers.

Throughout November, BSU wanted to help make a change in the community, so much so that BSU created “Make a Change” donations. The coins donated went toward The Color of Change Foundation, an organization created to help the advancement of African Americans.

A canned food drive was also held to help feed those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you to everyone who donated to the people who needed it the most.

Many more BSU events are to come this year. Stay tuned for next month’s newsletter and BSU social media updates.
