Dear Poppy,

I really want to get into gymnastics at KHS, but I feel like I’ll fail or do very bad. I have been wanting to do gymnastics for about 4 years now, yet I don’t even have my splits all the way down. And now, I have to be able to do a back handspring by December. Sorry this is a short letter, I don’t know how to put my thoughts into words.

Dear Stressed Person,

There is a famous quote that says, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” A fear of failure is normal, but you shouldn’t let that fear control your life. Even if you do “fail,” that’s okay because failure is an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and try again. Anyone can fail, but not everyone can get back up.

As for not being able to do the splits, I suggest searching online for some help. Youtube is a great source for tutorials and helpful tips. You can even find Gabby Douglas’s daily training routine on the internet. However, no one expects you to take on the intense life of an Olympic athlete. Start small by stretching every morning after waking up. Studies show that it makes you more flexible. If being a gymnast is really important to you, put in the work and try your best each day. I believe in you. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Poppy <3
