March Manga Madness

Pop culture from Asia strikes again at Kempsville High School with manga, or Japanese graphic novels. Manga is popular with teens across the country, and it’s uncommon for someone to not have at least heard terms like ‘Naruto,’ or seen students performing the “Naruto run” down the halls.

In the month of March, Kempsville’s library hosts an online series of polls each week to create a bracket, pitting manga series such as “Bleach” vs “My Hero Academia” against each other in popularity. Students can also vote more than once a week, giving readers a chance to try and get their all-time favorites on the list.

“I find it really nice that they’re diversifying polls in relation to students’ interests. It broadens perspective,” said Alyzabeth Bridgham, freshman.

Students can access the polls by going to the school’s homepage, hovering the mouse over the ‘Students’ tab and by selecting the ‘Library’ shortcut. Once on the overview of the library, click the hyperlink titled ‘March Manga Madness: Elite 8 Voting Link’ to be able to vote. The results will be calculated at the end of the week.

DeAndre Astrel, a senior, also enjoyed the concept, saying, “Being able to vote on your favorite manga/anime is a great thing because you then get to share what you enjoy with like-minded people and create friends from it.”

You can find any of the manga series being voted for in the library under the ‘Manga’ section located to the right of the entrance.
