Homecoming Game: Kempsville vs Green Run

Aaron Thomas, Sports Writer

On Monday, October 15, 2018, KHS’ 2018 Homecoming game commenced. A battle between Green Run High School and the Kempsville Chiefs, the favor was shown to be stacked against KHS in a 53% to 47%  poll by @Teamz757, which cover high school sports.

The hype of homecoming was in the air, with the turn out high; this game mattered to more than just the school, more so the seniors. Green Run started out strong by scoring the first touchdown of the game. Jovon Mims connected with Fold for a 21-yard touchdown to make the score 14-6, with 7:06 left in the 2nd quarter.

It did not take the chiefs long to score again. Mims found the red zone with a 20 yard run up the middle, making the score Green Run 14, Kempsville 12. The defense began their job early, stopping Green Run on 3rd and 4th downs at will, making it hard for Green Run to get going in the first half. At halftime, the score was the same: with Green Run winning with 14, and Kempsville having scored 12.

Many could smell an upset coming. Would the losing streak finally end? Would the Chiefs get the win they have been working so hard for? The next half would decide their fate. As Green Run got the ball first, they drove down the field for a quick score. Green Run 21, Kempsville 12.

With only 6:35 left on the clock, it was time for Kempsville to get to work. Rashad Scott put many moves on defenders to get into open field, along with hard runs between the tackles by Malik Tyler. The Chiefs continue to put pressure on Green Runs defense, but many times the chiefs would have plays called back.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities,” said Malik Tyler, linebacker for KHS. Those missed opportunities turned into points for Green Run, and they scored again with 4:51 left on the clock in the 3rd quarter.

Hope was starting to fade, the upset looked unlikely. After Green Run pushed the lead to 15 points, but that did not stop the Chiefs. Jovon ran in yet another touchdown with only 2:01 left in the game but missed the 2pt conversion, leaving the final score as 27-18.
